What is School Counseling?
The main goal of a comprehensive school counseling program is the success of each individual student. As a school counselor, I want to see every student make full use of the educational opportunities that await him or her. To do this, the content of our elementary school counseling program is designed with student success in mind. Our comprehensive school counseling program includes many aspects of counseling and delivers both indirect and direct services in each of the following domains:
Our comprehensive school counseling program is essential to building a positive learning environment. The school counseling program does not work alone. We partner with academic and behavioral initiatives to bring about positive changes in student achievement and behavior. The counseling program is planned by the school counselor and then implemented with the help of teachers, administrators, parents, volunteers, and other interested community stakeholders. The school counselor leads the program by advocating for its success, collaborating with others, and doing everything possible to take down any potential barriers to student success. The comprehensive school counseling program is successful when there is an increase in student achievement, improved graduation rate, better attendance, reduced disciplinary referrals, and increased student participation in the community.
